DOTI to Resume Additional Parking Enforcement Activities after Labor Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DENVER –  On Tuesday, September 8, following observance of the Labor Day holiday, Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, or DOTI, will resume additional parking enforcement activities suspended last March due to COVID-19. These additional enforcement activities include:

  • Enforcement of license plate/vehicle registration tags. Residents are encouraged to ensure their vehicle registrations are up to date.  Renewals can be made online and at DMV offices.
  • Booting. Residents are urged to take care of unpaid parking tickets and can do so online atwww.parksmartdenver.com. Vehicle owners with three (3) unpaid, overdue parking citations are eligible for booting.
  • With school back in session, residents should avoid school bus loading zones. DOTI will enforce these zones when schools reopen.

A reminder that DOTI resumed its enforcement of posted parking restrictions for street sweeping in July. Residents are encouraged to sign up for street sweeping reminders at www.pocketgov.com.  In June, downtown-area parking meters became operational again between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.; parking meters outside downtown became operational at the price and time limits posted on the meters. Enforcement of time-limited, non-metered parking spaces and residential parking programs also resumed in June.

The following enforcement activities will continue to be suspended until further notice:

  • Enforcement of parking meters downtown in the overnight hours (10pm – 6am)
  • Large vehicle parking: Until further notice, residents can park trucks and other vehicles more than 22’ in length on the street in non-residential areas.
  • Street paving: Amid the economic impacts of COVID-19, DOTI will refrain from issuing citations to people whose cars need to be towed for street paving operations until the 2021 paving season. Until then, residents are asked to make every attempt to move their cars so that this work can occur. Cars left on the street when work begins will be moved, normally within a two-block radius of where the car was parked. Residents who need help locating their cars can call the city’s non-emergency line at 720-913-2000 for assistance.

Assistance with residential parking permits and payment of parking citations:

Cashiering services at the Wellington E. Webb Building are closed due to COVID-19.

  • To request residential parking permits or to pay parking citations online, go to www.parksmartdenver.com.
  • For parking permit questions, call 720-913-5365
  • For citation questions, call 1-866-280-9988

Disputing a parking citation

In order to practice social distancing and help prevent the spread of Coronavirus, the Parking Magistrate’s Office is currently not accepting walk-in hearings, but is working remotely to assist customers. Here is information on how to reach the Parking Magistrate:

  • Dispute a parking ticket on line at www.parksmartdenver.com.
  • Contact the parking magistrate by phone at 1-866-280-9988, Monday – Friday between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm

A Brief History Of The COVID-19 Virus

It seems as if the moment the world became aware of COVID-19, it was already way too late, and it had already become a global pandemic. Many have asked how this happened, why control systems did not catch it sooner, and why word was not spread quicker about the situation.

Take a look at the history of how the virus started, and a few theories about how it originated. Keep in mind that with a virus of this type, it is extremely difficult to understand the exactly how first infection occurred.

The Beginning

On the 31st of December 2019 the World Health Organisation was first informed of a handful of cases of a pneumonia in Wuhan City. This was reason for concern due to the densely packed population of Wuhan City, which is officially home to around 11 million people. The area is also an economic hub of China, which means that a great many travellers are moving in and out of the city on a regular basis. In other words; Wuhan City is a prime spot for a health crisis to develop.

A second report emerged that 59 cases of the pneumonia were confirmed, on January 5th, but none had yet proved to be fatal.

The situation then escalated quickly. 10 days later it broke that the number had now jumped to 282 cases. 4 of the confirmed cases were reported to be in Japan, Thailand, and South Korea. But far more concerning was the information that there had been a total of 6 fatalities, plus 51 patients being severely ill, and a further 12 were considered to be in a critical condition.

On the 12th of January the virus responsible was isolated, and the genome shared. The virus was referred to as COVID-19, a novel coronavirus form. Importantly; COVID-19 is a novel version of the previously encountered SARS.

Where Did It Originate?

Most of us have now settled into lockdowns of various levels, and are happy to play now online to pass the time. But where, exactly, did COVID-19 actually originate?

There have been many theories and investigations into the origins of the virus, but it is currently not known where it was first passed to humans. It was strongly suggested that the virus may come from a nocturnal anteater, imported into China for its flesh. The animal carries a coronavirus that is extremely similar to SARS. Suggestions are that the virus may have passed form the animal to a human, and mutated as it jumped from host to host, eventually becoming COVID-19.

George Gao, the director of the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, went on record to declare that the source of COVID-19 was very likely to be the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market, which is known for selling fresh seafood along with live animals. However, upon samples being collected from the market, no trace of the virus was found.

This suggest that an event occurred prior to the outbreak first detected in Wuhan, though this is yet to be properly confirmed.

COVID-19 – When Will There Be A Vaccine?

Yes, the months have stretched on, and the world is now starting to fatigue of the pandemic. Constant warnings, lockdowns, the inability to travel globally and explore new attractions and quarantines are taking a toll. Everyone is now starting to wonder when it will all be over. In other words; when will there be a publicly available vaccine that will end the state of ongoing panic?

But when asking when a vaccine will be ready, it is first very important to understand what a vaccine is, and how exactly it will help the situation. After all, a vaccine is not a silver bullet that will instantly eradicate the world of COVID-19. Instead it is a gradual, methodical process that will turn the tide, until returning the world to a balance.

But that final balance is still some way off, even after the tide has been turned.

What Is A Vaccine?

Different vaccines are used for different viruses and must be carefully studied before being administered. Essentially a vaccination involves introducing a small, controlled amount of a virus into the human body. This stimulates the body into creating anti-bodies to combat the virus, thereby creating an immunity.

The virus is, therefore, not eradicated. Instead human bodies are made immune to the virus, essentially making the threat void.

How Close Is A COVID-19 Vaccine?

It normally takes years to develop a trusted vaccination, but the global medical industry is attempting to achieve the same results in just a few months. This is unprecedented, and a massive challenge for healthcare professionals around the world. But results are coming along at an astonishing rate.

As of 26 August 2020, Russia has already approved a vaccination, but this vaccination has yet to be fully approved via clinical trials. However, 7 other vaccinations are undergoing large scale trials, and 15 others are undergoing expanded safety trials. Another 25 are undergoing small scale trials, and 139 more are yet to enter human trials.

Essentially, this means that good progress is being made, and it shouldn’t be long before a vaccination is approved for large scale public use. Estimates say that there should be a working vaccine before the end of the year. Though, healthcare workers and the elderly will be targeted first for vaccination, before the rest of the population is focused on.

How Are Vaccines Delivered?

But when there is a vaccine, does this mean that you can kick back, relax, and start seeking out big wins this way on your phone? Well, you could do that already, assuming you’re following health and safety guidelines.

Even after vaccines are approved for public use, which should be soon, it still doesn’t mean that the world will instantly be over the pandemic. Mass producing hundreds of millions of doses of a vaccine is a slow, and extremely logistically challenging process. This means that it could still be months, or even a year until the world is properly overcoming the threat.

Though tensions will ease with a publicly available solution to the challenge, there will still be reason to stay safe.

Cool Things To Do In Denver

You, like everyone else, have probably been cooped up inside for a while. But cabin fever is a real thing and can creep up on you unexpectedly. Which is exactly why getting out and about is a good idea. Don’t worry though, our list of things to see and do are social distancing approved. So you can get out there and have some fun, completely guilt free.

Here is a list of some cool things you can do in Denver right now.

Visit Indian Hot Springs

Be honest, just because you’re getting out, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re interested in exerting yourself, right? Right. We’ve got you covered with the Idaho Hot Springs, which are exactly as wonderful as they sound. Picture kicking back in natural hot springs, and just soaking in the wonderful atmosphere.

Best of all the springs are only a 30-minute drive outside of town, and can be booked for hour long sessions at a rather reasonable price. We’ll share an additional little secret; the Tommyknocker Brewery is on the way, and nothing compliments a hot spring soak like a luxury beer.

Historical Bars

Speaking of luxury beer, you probably already knew that there are 2 locations in Denver that not only offer a luxurious selection but are also steeped in rich history. At The Oxford Hotel you will find the Cruise Room, which, as the name suggests, features a truly lovely nautical theme.

Your second option is the Brown Palace and its famous Ship Tavern, which also happens to feature a unique marine theme. Though in this case the venue is littered with a stunning range of intricate model ships.

Both places are perfect to kick back in, and surf some real money games on your phone while you sip a beverage.

Fine Food At A The Oldest Restaurant

Maybe you’d like a meal in the oldest restaurant in the entire state? The Buckhorn Exchange has been in business since 1893, which almost defies belief. But, it’s true, and the charming venue has managed to amass a collection of 575 taxidermy animals over the years.

Wondering what’s on the menu? Why, just some of the most beloved oysters in the area. Try them breaded with a horseradish dip. You won’t regret it.

Museum Of Contemporary Art

There are other, more well-known museums in Denver, but overlooking the Museum of Contemporary Art is all the more charming for being lesser known. The exhibits are extremely interesting and regularly updated, with artwork no just from Colorado, but across the entire globe.

A little secret here you might be interested in; Colorado residents get in for next to nothing.

Explore The Streets

No, we don’t mean just wondering around the streets at random. It turns out that River North Arts District and the Santa Fe Arts District have become a veritable wonderland of incredible street art. You can simply ride a bike or wander around either neighbourhood and be simply blown away by the stunning artwork on every corner. It won’t cost you a cent.

How to Start a Small Business in Denver

Many people looking for a more meaningful career decide to stop working for someone else, and start working for themselves. Starting your own business can be scary, but it also means that you can decide what you prioritize and what you don’t, and it also means that you can build your work around your life rather than the other way around.

If being your own boss appeals to you, there are a few things that you will need to make sure you do before you get started.

Name your business

Before you can do anything, you will need to name your business. When naming your business it’s a good idea to consider the following:

  • Avoid names that are difficult to spell – people won’t be able to find you easily.
  • Don’t pick a name that will limit you too much as your business grows.
  • Conduct a thorough internet search to see if anyone else is already using the name. It’s not a disaster if they are, but it will help to inform your decision.
  • Get the .com domain name. People tend to trust a .com domain over others.

Get your Federal Tax ID number

Your Federal Tax ID number, also known as an Employer Identification Number (EIN), is used to identify your business by the IRS. You’ll need it to allow you to open a business bank account, file taxes, get financing and handle employee payroll.

You can apply for your EIN online.

Register your business with the state

Before you can begin trading, you will need to file your business with the Secretary of State. This process has to be conducted online, and will cost between $20 and $50 depending on the type of business you are registering. It can be a good idea to engage with a corporate lawyer at this stage to ensure that you are choosing the correct business type for your needs, if you aren’t sure.

Once your business is formed you will also need to register with the Colorado Department of Revenue to ensure that you are paying the right amount of tax from the start. This can be tricky to get right, but it’s incredibly important, so it can be a good idea to get professional help with this step too, in the form of a CPA or accountant.

Build an online presence

Once you have your business set up, you need to let people know that you exist! The most effective way to do this is through an online presence.

You can build a website yourself using tools like WordPress or Squarespace relatively easily. The important, and tricky, part is getting people to see it! A lot of people engage with an agency like www.clickintelligence.co to help them promote their website by building an SEO strategy. Click Intelligence will help you to refine the content on your page, as well as help you to build a backlinking strategy (meaning to get your site mentioned on the sites of other relevant businesses), which will help your page to appear higher up in Google rankings and get you more visitors.

Licenses and permits

Depending on what type of business you are starting, you may need to file for licenses and permits. To ascertain what, if any, permits you will need, you can check with the Colorado Small Business Navigator.

Verdict in Arvada hit and run on 10 year-old walking from school

Guilty Verdict in Hit and Run of 10-year-old Walking Home from School

A Jefferson County jury found Jose Morales-Reyes, DOB: 8/5/69, guilty of four counts after running over a 10-year-old child walking home from school in Arvada. At the end of a week of trial, the jury found Morales-Reyes guilty of Leaving the Scene with Serious Bodily injury (SBI) (F4); Vehicular Assault Reckless- SBI (F5); Driving While Ability Impaired (M); and Reckless Driving (T2). They returned their verdict on August 21, 2020

On November 8, 2019 the little girl was walking home from school with her six-year-old sister. They were walking on the sidewalk at 58th and Carr in Arvada when Morales-Reyes drove up over the curb and crashed into the 10-year-old.

The jury heard testimony that he continued along the curb for 65 feet and left the area. He then drove in a large circle, passing back by the crash scene before he ultimately returned and turned himself into police.

The little girl suffered two broken legs, a broken arm, a concussion, a laceration on her stomach, and a grade 4 liver laceration. The six-year-old was not injured.

Sentencing has been set for October 30, 2020. He could potentially face up to nine years in prison.

Crawl space repair problems you need to know

While investigating crawl space repair problems, you’ll come to know that there are plenty of them. And one downfall of such vast problems is that you may find it rather difficult to narrow down the ones you are having.

The crawl space issues differ with different crawl space designs. You have to keep your eyes open for those specific signs if you want to avoid more significant threats. Home owners need to know what’s going on and a general understanding of your home is also much required.

Here are a few crawl space problems along with their solutions.

Crawl space problems you might have.

As I have mentioned earlier that there are a variety of crawl space problems out there, there is a handful of them that pop out frequently, so; you have to look out for them diligently. As a homeowner here are a few problems you need to know about,

Water standing in your space

Water standing in your crawl space can result from water leakage of pipe, a flood from outside, or hydrostatic pressure. High levels of humidity, is one of the signs that your crawl space is flooded. Additionally, if you have encountered a severe storm, then it’s essential to check crawl space vents for standing water.

High indoor humidity

You will end up with a higher humidity level if water has been staging in your crawl space; and it may lead to drastic effects like.general awakening of floor joists, mold, mildew, etc.  These disastrous circumstances will make the place more uncomfortable for living and unequivocally expensive to condition. So, if there is more humidity indoors than outdoors, then it’s probably the time for you to call a professional for crawl space repair.

Condensation

As the humidity level rises, you will also start to notice condensation in your space. It usually happens when the air becomes too saturated for water to stay in it, so it starts to collect on surfaces. And this surface can be your floor joists or foundation, which can lead to haphazardous effects.

Mold in your crawl space

Humidity also accompanies molds; they thrive at humidity around 70 percent. That might be wet crawl space insulation, water-soaked wood, or standing water at the bottom of crawl space. Mold, in addition to weakening your home’s foundation, can also lead to dozens of health hazards. Seeing the signs of mold is unambivalently tough without checking the crawl space itself. But with health problems they possess, I would recommend that you never go down there without proper precautions. If possible, consult some professionals before continuing.

Foundation cracks

Cracks in your foundation always portend some significant happenings. Remember that hairline cracks within six months of pouring concrete can be cosmetic, but anything more significant than 8 inches can indicate some structural problems.

Foundation is the basis for a home’s entire structure, which means that you have to take these cracks seriously. Remember to maintain regular inspection and immediately seek professional help whenever you notice any damage. If you’re able to get down to see your foundation, these cracks will likely be apparent. Otherwise, it’s good to maintain regular inspections and call in an expert if you have any concerns regarding your foundation’s stability.

Finally, a limited re-opening of I-70 thru Glenwood Canyon

CDOT announces limited reopening of I-70 in Glenwood Canyon after fourteen days

Travelers urged to be aware of weather forecast and potential for intermittent closures

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is announcing a limited reopening of Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon this morning. CDOT asks that motorists prepare for reduced speeds, no stopping in the canyon and closures due to mudslides and other events. CDOT also urges travelers to stay focused on the road and avoid distracted driving. The I-70 closure began Monday, Aug. 10, when the Grizzly Creek Fire started burning along the interstate. The closure was located between Glenwood Springs (Mile Point 116) and Gypsum (MP 140). Wildfires in other parts of Colorado continue to affect Colorado Highways 14 and 139.

The Colorado Department of Transportation opened 1-70 in Glenwood Canyon on Monday morning. Travelers will encounter a lower speed limit and should anticipate more safety closures after rains or other weather. Motorists should also plan for not being able to stop at rest areas in the canyon, due to rockfall and other hazards.

While on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon, it is critical for motorists to pay attention to the roadway, and follow signage and traffic guidance through the canyon. A head-to-head detour is in place between Hanging Lake Tunnel (Mile Point MP 125) and near No Name Tunnel (MP 117.6). This detour is on the eastbound deck, and is similar to the construction detour in place this summer during the Glenwood Canyon Phase 7 project. CDOT asks motorists to plan for additional travel time due to lower speed limits in the detour and elsewhere in the canyon.

Travelers should prepare for intermittent closures on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon that are required for repairs after the Grizzly Creek Fire or if conditions in the canyon require a safety closure. Repairs include the replacement of power poles by aerial operations, which require closing the interstate. The roadway and structures along the eastbound deck have been reviewed and are safe to travel on.

Travelers are urged to pay close attention to weather forecasts. Although CDOT has carefully reviewed the hazards affecting I-70 in Glenwood Canyon, the roadway is a changing environment. Even minimal amounts of rain could trigger mudslides, debris flows or rock slides in the burn area. Showers and thunderstorms are forecast for Glenwood Canyon this week and could prompt a safety closure. Motorists are asked to watch the forecast closely through the weekend. CDOT has a plan in place for needed emergency closures due to rockfall, mudslides or other impacts from burn scars on the canyon walls. We have stationed personnel in the canyon to allow quick response to any events that could impact the roads. Those personnel have the equipment necessary to restrict traffic so that CDOT can safely clear the road and assess damage before reopening. CDOT is also working on plans to bolster long-term resiliency to sediment fall and avalanche.

Travelers will not be able to stop in Glenwood Canyon while traveling on I-70. Rest areas in the canyon will be closed and motorists will not be able to use exit ramps. I-70 is too narrow to allow stopped vehicles along the roadway and Colorado State Patrol troopers will assist in watching for motorists who attempt to stop. The Glenwood Canyon bike path is also closed at this time. Rafting, kayaking and other river recreation activities are not allowed on the Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon at this time.

CDOT will continue to monitor conditions in the canyon and will restrict traffic when necessary to maintain safety for the traveling public.

Denver Needs Nurses: Here’s How You Can Help

The demand for nurses is increasing all over the country, particularly in Denver. Even with cases of coronavirus slowly declining, health facilities are struggling, and this is especially the case in care homes for the elderly. As the average of the population increases, the need for healthcare professionals increases making healthcare one of the fastest growing sectors in the country.

We all know how important it is to take care of our nurses, but what can you actually do? Here are some options.

Feed The Fight

Feed The Fight is a charity started by Dr Matt Montgomery, who is an anaesthesiologist at Rose Medical Centre. The idea is that the money donated will provide food to hard working health care staff who are doing long hours on the front line, and often find themselves working long hours without food.

Since its inception the movement has grown, and Feed The Fight have enlisted the help of local restaurants to help them provide food to even more well deserving health care professionals. Nurses have said that the initiative has been really helpful to them, as not only has it made sure that they don’t go hungry, it has given them one less thing to worry about when they come into the hospital for an already overwhelming day of work. It has also helped staff to feel that their communities are rallying behind them.

Denver Health Foundation

Another organization doing good work is the Denver Health Foundation, who were founded in 1998 to support the work of Denver Health. They found that federal funding was insufficient to cover all the work they needed to do for their threefold goal of patient care, education and research, so they decided to set up a way for donors to help. Denver Health joins forces with donors to provide social innovations for the growing city, such as:

  • Health care delivery
  • Health clinics for children in schools
  • Social and community support
  • Economic development through workforce development

If you would like to support the work of the Denver Health Foundation, they accept donations, or alternatively, you could offer your time as a volunteer. Volunteers are vital in allowing the professional staff to have more time to provide quality care to patients.

All volunteers begin as pathfinders, helping patients find their way around the huge and sometimes maze-like campus at Denver Health. Once volunteers have completed 32 hours of volunteering as a pathfinder, they can specialize in areas and do things like:

  • Book Cart – visit patients on medical surgery floors and provide a trolley of books, puzzles and games.
  • Medical Surgery Floors – restock rooms, meet patient needs, answer call lights and help support staff.
  • Clerical Volunteers – welcome people, put together educational materials and provide administrative support.
  • My-Chart Sign Up – help patients to sign up for my-chart, which allows them to access medical services such as repeat prescriptions and appointment booking online.
  • Pediatric Volunteers – help organize events and care for the littlest hospital residents.
  • Spiritual Care – working in the spiritual care department to help patients with matters relating to their spiritual well-being.
  • Emergency Department – support patients, run errands and restock rooms in the fast paced trauma center
  • Pet Therapy – provide comfort and joy to patients in the hospital if your furry friend is certified as a therapy animal.

Train as a Nurse

Training as a nurse you will not only be directly supporting your fellow nurses and helping to ease their workload, but you will also be making a great career choice.

Healthcare is one of the fastest growing sectors in the country, so training as a nurse is a good way to ensure that you will always be able to find work. It’s also well paid: the median salary for nurses in 2019 was $73,300.

Nursing is also an incredibly rewarding career choice, as you will directly be working with people to improve their lives and there are plenty of opportunities for progression. Nurses work in huge city hospitals or small local health clinics, and once you have gained some experience you can take the opportunity to specialize in the branch of nursing that most appeals to you. Specialization usually comes with an increase in salary, too.

It’s getting easier all the time to retrain as a nurse. You can study online accelerated BSN programs for non nurses, which means that if you are unable to relocate, this doesn’t have to stop you from pursuing a new career.

Look After Yourself

Looking after yourself is probably the most powerful thing that you can do to help support nurses in Denver. By looking after yourself and encouraging your friends and family to do the same, you are easing nurse workloads and improving your own life into the bargain!

According to Web MD, there are a few simple things you can do to look after your health.

  • Becoming flexitarian is a great way to get a lot of the benefits of a plant based diet without having to cut out meat and dairy completely. Studies have shown that people who eat more plant based foods may keep their weight in check and lower chances of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Varying your veg is important because by eating as many varieties of fruits and vegetables as possible, you are getting a much wider variety of vitamins and minerals. A great way to do this is to make sure that at least half of your plate is made up of veg and that it has as many different colors as possible. It sounds a little simplistic, but this tip genuinely helps you to get varied vitamins into your diet!
  • Cutting out sugary drinks and replacing them with water means that you will be getting far less empty calories, and you will be better hydrated. Sugary drinks have been linked to heart attacks, gout and obesity, and some studies have shown that a soft drink or two each day can increase your chances of developing type 2 diabetes by 26%.
  • Move around more and it will benefit you by helping you maintain a healthy weight, keep your joints from stiffening, and keep your heart and lungs healthy. The recommended amount of exercise is 150 minutes per week, but anything is better than nothing, so even if it’s just making a point of walking around the block it’s well worth doing.
  • Sleep is not only lovely, but it is a must for good health. Sleep deprivation raises your odds of heart disease, diabetes, strokes and obesity, and won’t help your mood either. Make it a priority to get to bed early enough that you wake up well rested.
  • Commit to managing stress by finding an outlet for it, whether it’s talking with friends, meditating, yoga, or taking up a high intensity sport. If that doesn’t work, then talk it through with a therapist or counselor to find a solution.
  • Wash your hands as it really is the simplest way to prevent the spread of disease.
  • Limit your drinking to one drink per day for women, and two for men.
  • Don’t smoke, it’s bad for almost every part of your body and has no benefits. If you are struggling to give up then speak to your doctor.
  • Attend regular checkups as they will help prevent serious illness, and give you a better prognosis if you do become ill.

It’s a good idea to focus on just one area at a time when trying to make your life healthier, as if you try to do too many things at once then it is likely to become overwhelming. You may also find it easier to make positive changes if you talk to your friends and family about what you are doing. Not only will they be able to provide you with support, but seeing the good work that you’re doing might inspire them to do the same!

Surpasses the Total Number of Preventable, Accidental Deaths

The National Safety Council is highly alarmed to see that the mortality numbers for COVID-19 already have surpassed the total annual number of preventable, accidental deaths in 2018, the most recent year of final data – and it is only August. At this pace, COVID-19 likely will be the third leading cause of death in 2020, behind only heart disease and cancer. It would mark the first time since 2016 that preventable deaths – which include drug overdoses, motor vehicle crashes and falls – would not be the third leading cause of death in the United States.

According to the latest data, the number of confirmed and probable COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. now exceeds 170,000, eclipsing the total number of preventable deaths in 2018 (167,127).

Although preliminary, this grim milestone clearly illustrates the scale of the pandemic. In a little more than six months, COVID-19 has claimed more lives than accidental drug overdoses, motor vehicle crashes and falls combined during 2018. In addition, COVID-19 is having an impact on preventable deaths, with increases in opioid overdose and motor vehicle fatality rates as an indirect consequence of the pandemic.

NSC urges the U.S. public to stay vigilant and follow public health guidance around facial coverings, physical distancing and proper hygiene. Employers who are reopening traditional work environments must ensure their employees are returning safely. NSC has materials for all types of work environments – including schools – through its SAFER initiative, available at nsc.org/safer.

We know how to end preventable, accidental deaths like overdoses, motor vehicle crashes and falls. NSC continues to work with experts on effective pandemic countermeasures, because safety will always be at the heart of all prevention efforts. We are committed to collaborating with stakeholders and leaders – both in the private and public sectors – to save lives and prevent injuries, from the workplace to anyplace.

Justice Brian D. Boatright to serve as next Chief Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court

*Publisher’s note: Brian Boatright, who grew up in Wheat Ridge, was my childhood tennis coach. He is an alumni of Jefferson High School.

The Colorado Supreme Court announced today that Chief Justice Nathan B. Coats will retire in January 2021, when he reaches the Colorado Constitution’s mandatory retirement age of 72. The Court will issue a formal vacancy announcement with a request for applications later this year.

Chief Justice Coats has a distinguished career in public service. He served as an appellate attorney in the Colorado Attorney General’s Office for eight years and as Chief Appellate Deputy District Attorney for the Second Judicial District for 14 years. Governor Bill Owens appointed Chief Justice Coats to the Colorado Supreme Court in 2000. He was selected by the Court to be the Chief Justice in 2018.

The Justices of the Supreme Court have unanimously voted to move to shorter rotational terms for the office of Chief Justice, selecting Justice Brian D. Boatright to serve as Chief Justice upon Chief Justice Coats’s retirement, and selecting Justice Monica M. Márquez to serve as the next Chief Justice following Justice Boatright’s term of office. The Court believes that announcing both selections now provides for continuity of leadership for the Judicial Branch.

Justice Boatright brings extensive experience as a trial court judge and with probation programs and policies.  The Supreme Court believes that Justice Boatright is well equipped to handle the current challenges facing Colorado trial courts due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related budget shortfalls.  “I am humbled to lead the Judicial Branch in these extraordinary times,” Justice Boatright said. “As Chief Justice, I plan to focus my energy on supporting our trial courts and probation departments as they continue to adapt to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and safely conduct the important work of the Branch.”  Justice Márquez added, “The Judicial Branch will be in good hands these next few years with Justice Boatright. I bring my support and extensive state government experience, and I’ll be running at full speed when Justice Boatright passes the baton.”

Justice Boatright was born and raised in Colorado.  He graduated from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri and received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver.  Justice Boatright served as a Deputy District Attorney for more than nine years. In 1999, Governor Bill Owens appointed Justice Boatright as a District Court Judge in the First Judicial District. Governor John Hickenlooper appointed Justice Boatright to the Colorado Supreme Court in 2011. Justice Boatright is the 47th member of the Court to serve as Chief Justice since Colorado’s statehood in 1876.

The Colorado Supreme Court is the state’s court of last resort. Its decisions are binding
on all other Colorado state courts. Under the Colorado Constitution, the Chief Justice serves as the executive head of the Colorado Judicial Branch, comprising the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, as well as the state’s district and county courts.

Gov. Polis issues 30-Day Ban on open fires

Colorado is at the height of wildfire season, and currently grappling with four fires across the state – the Grizzly Creek Fire in Glenwood Canyon, the Pine Gulch Fire near Grand Junction, the Williams Fork Fire in Grand County, and the Cameron Peak Fire near Redfeather Lakes.

These wildfires are placing further strain on our state at a time when we are already battling a similarly fierce and deadly foe. They are imposing yet another challenge on our local communities and our already-strained public health resources and testing capacity, as critical first responders are diverted and require extensive testing. Additionally, people are understandably and rightfully getting tested because poor air quality can cause COVID-like symptoms.

The Governor is asking all Coloradans to be extra diligent about fire safety right now, given the simultaneous burden and threat of COVID-19. Colorado is hot and dry, and something as small as a cigarette butt or a spark from a vehicle can start a fire – not to mention sources like campfires or fireworks. For those of you living in the wildland-urban interface, take the time to mitigate the threat of fire danger on your property.
Given what’s at stake, the Governor will be issuing a 30-day statewide ban on open fires, which goes into effect August 20. Three of the four fires we are currently fighting are believed to be caused by human activity. We need to do everything we can to prevent new fires from starting. The ban will be in effect for all counties and prohibit all campfires, fireworks, and other open sources of ignition. Home barbecues, public grills, camp stoves, and approved covered fire pits will be permissible.
Please find more details on the statewide ban and the rest of the Governor’s briefing here.
