Pirates win the battle at the net - #lakewoodnews

It took five sets to decide the hotly contested Sept. 27 Alameda-Skyview volleyball match that opened league play for both teams. But the Pirates won the deciding set to win the best of five set match, 3-2, to stretch the Alameda match winning streak to six.

"We are a much better team now than when the season began," Alameda Coach Shannon Sherburne said before the match. "The girls have learned a lot quickly from each other and from playing good teams. We also have had some success, which builds the team's morale and confidence."

Skyview won the first set 25-21. Alameda responded with back-to-back set wins, 25-17 and 25-23. The Wolverines won the fourth set 25-20 to force the deciding set. Alameda scored the first seven points then withstood a Skyview rally to win the deciding set, 15-8, which earned the 3-2 match win.

Mechelle Guzman led the team in kills with 12 and she made eight assists. Teammate Brianna Lopez had eight kills and three digs while Gianna Williams had eight kills, sixaces and four digs. Three Pirates, Rebecca Huerta, Lopez and Williams, each had six serving aces.

Guzman said it was a hard match against Skyview as both teams played well and it was a real battle.

"I did OK serving tonight but my strength is my hitting and blocking," she said. "I practice my hitting. When I go up to hit the ball, I try to look for an open spot in the defense. But most of all, I try to hit the ball hard and help my team win."

Alameda is in the Colorado 7 league and the match against Skyview was the first league game for the Pirates. The seven teams in the league play each opponent twice so the remaining matches on Alameda's regular season schedule are all against league opponents.
