Colorado Secretary of State to combat foreign misinformation in election

Russian election interference will find it a harder go in Colorado.

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold announced today that her office is expanding its efforts to combat foreign influence operations leading up to the November General Election.  The initiative includes social media and digital outreach and a website to help voters identify foreign misinformation. The initiative further encourages voters to access accurate information as well as tips on how Coloradans can fight back and stop the spread of incorrect material.

“Colorado is considered the safest state in which to cast a ballot, and we continually innovate to maintain our leading cyber preparedness. Foreign adversaries are conducting influence operations to try to undermine Americans’ confidence in the electoral process, and states must act” said Secretary Griswold. “That’s why we are launching efforts to combat misinformation. It’s important that voters have accurate election information.”

The Federal Government has consistently warned that foreign countries are targeting our election. Just last month, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency provided the most pointed warnings to date, noting foreign actors may try to undermine confidence in election results by spreading disinformation on fake websites, altering existing legitimate websites, sending fraudulent emails, or releasing articles in fake online journals. In response to the threat environment, Secretary Griswold created the Rapid Response Election Security Cyber Unit (RESCU) earlier this summer to help combat foreign misinformation and emerging cyber threats.

Academic studies and our allies’ experiences indicate that mitigating foreign misinformation and disinformation requires ensuring citizens are aware of the threat, think critically about what they see on social media, and know where to find reliable information.

As a result, the RESCU team is, in coordination with partners in and outside of government, advancing numerous initiatives to increase voter’s resilience to such threats, including a public outreach effort.  The expanded initiative to combat misinformation will help Coloradans understand that when it comes to registering, voting, and election results, “opinions are fun, but facts are better,” inspiring voters to seek reliable electoral process information from trusted sources.  A special website has also been created to help voters further be able to identify and combat foreign disinformation.

The Colorado Secretary of State’s office is also working with governmental partners such as the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation on additional election security measures.

What to Do If You’re Getting Abused at Home

Domestic violence is much more common than even marriage these days. Two people create a relationship and move in together with one another, but one of them is mostly always abusing the other through verbal abuse, if not physical. And many times, the other person can also be unaware of the fact they are getting abused in the hands of the abuser. Domestic violence is common and mostly not reported for many reasons by the victim to continue the relationship or to keep living the same life.

Abuse at home can be harmful to the victim in every way possible. As you cannot relax at home and have to succumb to draining abuse from the person you care about a lot. There is also no place to hide, and you never know when the abuser becomes agitated and attacks again. In such an instance, life can become hard to live, let alone to progress happily in. For this reason, getting out of such a toxic environment and relationship is necessary.

Keep reading the following guide to know your rights and whether you’re being abused or not, along with steps to take for your resurrection from such a damaging lifestyle:

Signs of Domestic Violence

Violence in closed walls of a home or abuse can come in several different ways and not just physical. If you think that you’re being isolated from the world or questioning your personality due to your partner’s statements about you, you could be suffering from other types of abuses. Different kinds of abuse can be verbal, emotional, sexual, financial, spiritual, and physical abuse. However, what you’re going through abuse that doesn’t fall into these categories, make sure to identify it as well for the better of your wellbeing.

Hence, abuse can be challenging to classify, but not so much to identify it happening. You may be getting the idea that your partner has been or started to abuse you in a certain way. To specify it, check for acts of aggression, dissatisfaction, jealousy or possessiveness, threats, physical or sexual violence, and so on from them. These are the leading indicators and reasons behind your partner’s abuse and can be of different altitudes from mild to severe, which can be highly dangerous.

Remember to Blame the Right Person

Your spouse might conduct joint abuses of physical and verbal on you and try to convince you that it is your fault for them to be doing so. This is actually emotional abuse and is harmful to people with previous mental problems. Thus, trusting that your partner is the same friendly person you knew when you started going out with them can make you believe their words.

Don’t let these statements get the best of you, and even if you did before, it’s time to place the blame on the wrongdoer and them only. Make sure that you’re firm on the idea of who is the wrongdoer in the household and who is the victim – you. This can be your first step to a better life without abuse and overshadowing of a wrong person that doesn’t know how to treat you right.

See if Your Partner Wants to Redeem

Making the decision to leave your partner if you have a history with them or a family with kids can be more challenging than many people think. By now, people, even your loved ones, would have judged you for not leaving an abusive relationship like this. But it’s not their fault either if they don’t understand your dependability on your partner and the reason behind you being together with them. For this reason, if separating still feels complicated, and the abuse is subsiding with chances of your partner redeeming for their actions, you may not need to remove yourself.

However, many times abusers have returned to their previous behaviors even after displaying a sense of responsibility for their wrongdoing and pleading for forgiveness. So you need to understand the patterns of your partner and identify the real from fake. And if your spouse really wants to make things better with you and create a thriving household, you can confide in them again after careful catharsis and advice from loved ones.

Check for Programs Available to You

As your partner takes to making amends with you and correcting their habits, not all is good until you can make sure so. You have the right to get justified and apologized for the misconduct imposed on you. For this reason, you can also make your partner join a program or counseling to help you two get through the dark part of your life together.

This can be of help for your partner to know your rights and present better behavior towards you. The recovery program can also help you overcome the feelings of anger and disappointment in your partner and forgive them easily. However, at any point, you think the program is not affecting your partner enough to stop the misconduct with you for good; it’s best to move away.

Know Your Rights

In the process of getting constantly verbally and emotionally abused, you can start to lose your self-worth and not know what your rights are. Everyone has a set of rights living in any country of the world as a human being and for their role career-wise and inside households. You must know all about the rights you are entitled to, to make a responsible decision of getting away from your abusive spouse for good and living a better life.

This is the Right Time to Get Help

If you have been waiting for the right time to plan an escape from the letdown of a person your spouse turned out to be; this is the right time. Before it’s too late, you have to make the decision right now to live an upright life and stop supporting someone who does nothing but pull you down. Please don’t wait for your abuser to get better because all they ever do is get worse by the day. You could end up getting hurt badly and develop a scar for life or ruin the life of your child if not taken the step to safety right now.

Face Your Worries

The reason that you are not able to leave and haven’t done so yet may be due to some guilt inside you for your abusive partner or your dependency on them. If there are still feelings lurking in you for them or other worries of leaving the household concerning your children’s’ future, make sure to deal with these uncertainties. Contact the right people who can arrange some things like a place to live, a job and some cash for you. If you require emotional support, you can get therapy or join a group of abuse victims and make some friends you can rely on.

Identify Safety and Worst Times for Your Abuse Partners

While you make preparations for your departure from your abuser, make sure that the situation at home isn’t too bad to stay for the time. You can be smart and create some safety schemes to remain safe from excessive abuse. Identify the times your abuser is the most agitated and refrain from things that push them to carry out abuse. Make sure that you are ready to face your abuser if they try anything harmful enough for you to get hurt. Hide weapons and devise safe places to be when the situation starts to get elevated.

Get Help with the Escape

Once you decide to escape from the dark place that your home had turned into, verify you have the right people backing you up and a safe place to return to. Ensure your escape plan is foolproof and one that can be executed quickly and without alarming the abuser. If your household includes children, train them again and again on the escape plan. Prepare a car to get away quickly.

Make sure to grab all your necessary possessions and the pieces of evidence against the abuse. Construct a list of all the emergency contacts you may need. It’s also best to contact some services in your situation to come to your rescue if things downside. You can also hire legal help from a reliable Orange County domestic violence lawyer to get support with your escape and further develop the court case against your wrongdoer. Do all this while using a different cell phone than yours, not to let the abuser doubt you, and be as discreet as possible.

Work Hard for a Better Future

Once you escape successfully from the abuser who made your life miserable and kept you from reaching better places in your life, you will have to work hard for a better experience. You may feel all sorts of feelings once you let go of the gloomiest part of your life and feel down. There may also be post-trauma depression, but you have to be a strong person for yourself and your kids if you have any and prepare for a better future.

You must get therapy as you start to build a new life so that all your past worries and unneeded feelings of guilt or fear find an escape. You can join support groups for yourself or your kids. There are also domestic violence programs for different people to help them deal with the damages and make things like employment and housing available you can take part in. Make sure to fight for your rights until the end. Strive for a better future with good education and employment.

Number of Colorado pedestrians killed has nearly doubled since 2008

pedestrian death photo
The number of pedestrians killed annually on Colorado’s roadways has nearly doubled since 2008, per new analysis from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety and AAA Colorado. That surpasses a 55 percent nationwide increase in pedestrian deaths over the same period. All told, across the country, more pedestrians lost their lives in 2018 than in any year since 1990.

“We’re lucky to live in Colorado, where we cherish our active lifestyles – and where there are so many good reasons to leave the car at home and run, walk or bike. That pedestrian deaths here outpace the national average should ring alarm bells,” said Skyler McKinley, director of public affairs for AAA Colorado. “As we continue to grow, drivers, pedestrians and, most importantly, governments need to do more to protect our most vulnerable.”

The report’s key findings include:

  • In Colorado and across the country, the startling jump in deaths occurred almost entirely in urban areas, much of it at mid-block locations along arterials (major roads designed to move large volumes of traffic). Urban crashes account for 93 percent of the total national increase in pedestrian fatalities.
  • Non-white populations are over-represented among pedestrian fatalities. Deaths of Black and Hispanic pedestrians increased by a larger amount than white pedestrians on a percentage basis.
  • Nationwide, pedestrians killed at non-intersection locations without crosswalks rose 70 percent from 2009-2018.
  • Three of every four pedestrians killed on U.S. roads in 2018 were struck in darkness. Fatalities in darkness also account for the vast majority of the overall increase in pedestrian fatalities since 2009. The number of pedestrians killed in darkness in 2018 was larger than the total number of pedestrians killed in any and all lighting conditions in 2009, 2010 or 2011.
  • 84 percent of all pedestrian fatalities in 2018, and 84 percent of the overall increase in pedestrian fatalities over the study period, occurred on roads with speed limits of 30 mph or higher. Past AAA Foundation research has shown that when a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle, their chances of survival drops precipitously with each additional mile per hour increase in speed at speeds above roughly 25 mph.
  • Alcohol remains a problem among pedestrian fatalities, as 32 percent of all pedestrians who died had a blood alcohol concentration equal to or greater than the legal limit for driving. Still, sober pedestrians’ fatalities increased by a larger amount over the study period, both in raw numbers and on a percentage basis. The number of sober pedestrians killed in 2018 was nearly as large as the total number of pedestrians killed in 2009.

“As we work to eliminate preventable tragedies on our roadways, it’s imperative we avoid a blame game between pedestrians and motorists,” McKinley said. “The bottom line is that everybody has the same right to use our transportation infrastructure without fearing for their life. The data suggest that pedestrians should take care to cross at crosswalks, when possible. Drivers, in turn, need to be more vigilant – especially in urban areas, and especially at night. Finally, governments must seriously evaluate lowering speed limits and changing roadway design in pedestrian-heavy corridors. We can reverse this trend, but it’s going to take working together.”

Safety Tips for Drivers

  • Look out for pedestrians at all times. When you are operating a vehicle, you have accepted a heightened responsibility for other people on the road. Safety is a two-way street. Often, pedestrians— especially younger ones— are not where you would expect them to be. Remain vigilant.
  • Follow posted speed limits, especially in areas of heavy pedestrian traffic. This is even more important in areas that have lower speed limits, such as school zones and neighborhood streets where pedestrians may appear suddenly.
  • Overall visibility is limited in bad weather conditions and poorly lit areas. Not only is it more difficult for drivers to see oncoming pedestrians, it also is harder for pedestrians to see you. Make sure your lights are on and you use your signals properly. Use extra caution in these circumstances.
  • Put down your phone. Smartphones and handheld electronic devices take your eyes off of the road and distract your attention.
  • Always yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. When approaching a crosswalk, reduce your speed and be prepared to stop. When you are stopped at a crosswalk, allow enough room between your vehicle and the crosswalk so other drivers can see the pedestrians you have stopped for. Do not pass vehicles stopped at a crosswalk: They have stopped to allow pedestrians to pass or make sure the way is clear.

Safety Tips for Pedestrians

  • Never assume a driver will give you the right of way. Make every effort to make eye contact with the driver of a stopped or approaching vehicle before entering the roadway.
  • Use crosswalks when crossing the street. If a crosswalk is unavailable, be sure to find the most well-lit spot on the road to cross and wait for a long enough gap in traffic to make it safely across the street.
  • Stay on sidewalks whenever possible. If a sidewalk is not available, be sure to walk on the far side of the road facing traffic. This will help increase your visibility to drivers.
  • Know and follow all traffic rules, signs and signals. You need to be aware of the rules vehicles around you must follow to properly anticipate what drivers will do.

Capitol Rioters Planned for Weeks in Plain Sight. The Police Weren’t Ready.

ProPublica is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative newsroom. Sign up for The Big Story newsletter to receive stories like this one in your inbox.

The invasion of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday was stoked in plain sight. For weeks, the far-right supporters of President Donald Trump railed on social media that the election had been stolen. They openly discussed the idea of violent protest on the day Congress met to certify the result.

“We came up with the idea to occupy just outside the CAPITOL on Jan 6th,” leaders of the Stop the Steal movement wrote on Dec. 23. They called their Wednesday demonstration the Wild Protest, a name taken from a tweet by Trump that encouraged his supporters to take their grievances to the streets of Washington. “Will be wild,” the president tweeted.

Ali Alexander, the founder of the movement, encouraged people to bring tents and sleeping bags and avoid wearing masks for the event. “If D.C. escalates… so do we,” Alexander wrote on Parler last week — one of scores of social media posts welcoming violence that were reviewed by ProPublica in the weeks leading up to Wednesday’s attack on the capitol.

Thousands of people heeded that call.

For reasons that remained unclear Wednesday night, the law enforcement authorities charged with protecting the nation’s entire legislative branch — nearly all of the 535 members of Congress gathered in a joint session, along with Vice President Mike Pence — were ill-prepared to contain the forces massed against them.

On Wednesday afternoon, a thin line of U.S. Capitol Police, with only a few riot shields between them and a knot of angry protesters, engaged in hand-to-hand combat with rioters on the steps of the West Front. They struggled with a flimsy set of barricades as a mob in helmets and bulletproof vests pushed its way toward the Capitol entrance. Videos showed officers stepping aside, and sometimes taking selfies, as if to usher Trump’s supporters into the building they were supposed to guard.

A former Capitol policeman well-versed in his agency’s procedures was mystified by the scene he watched unfold on live television. Larry Schaefer, a 34-year Capitol Police veteran who retired in December 2019, said his former colleagues were experienced in dealing with aggressive crowds.

“It’s not a spur-of-the-moment demonstration that just popped up,” Schaefer said. “We have a planned, known demonstration that has a propensity for violence in the past and threats to carry weapons — why would you not prepare yourself as we have done in the past?”

A spokesperson for the Capitol Police did not respond to a request for comment.

In recent years, federal law enforcement agencies have stepped up their focus on far-right groups, resulting in a spate of arrests. In October, the FBI arrested a group of Michigan extremists and charged them with plotting to kidnap the state’s governor. On Monday, Washington police arrested Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the far-right group the Proud Boys, on charges of burning a Black Lives Matter banner.

Conversations on right-wing platforms are monitored closely by federal intelligence. In September, a draft report by the Department of Homeland Security surfaced, identifying white supremacists as the biggest threat to national security.

The warnings of Wednesday’s assault on the Capitol were everywhere — perhaps not entirely specific about the planned time and exact location of an assault on the Capitol, but enough to clue in law enforcement about the potential for civil unrest.

On Dec. 12, a poster on the website MyMilitia.com urged violence if senators made official the victory of President-elect Joe Biden.

“If this does not change, then I advocate, Revolution and adherence to the rules of war,” wrote someone identifying themselves as I3DI. “I say, take the hill or die trying.”

Wrote another person: “It’s already apparent that literally millions of Americans are on the verge of activating their Second Amendment duty to defeat tyranny and save the republic.”

The easily overpowered police force guarding the Capitol on Wednesday posed a stark contrast to the tactics deployed by local police during this summer’s Black Lives Matter protests. Then, the city felt besieged by law enforcement.

On June 1, following a few days of mostly peaceful protests, the National Guard, the Secret Service and the U.S. Park Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse a nonviolent crowd in Lafayette Square outside the White House to allow Trump to pose with a Bible in front of a nearby church.

“We need to dominate the battlespace,” then-Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said on a call with dozens of governors, asking them to send their National Guard forces to the capital.

On June 2 — the day of the primary election in Washington — law enforcement officers appeared on every corner, heavily armed in fatigues and body armor. Humvees blocked intersections. Buses full of troops deployed into military columns and marshaled in front of the Lincoln Memorial in a raw show of force. Police kettled protesters in alleys. Choppers thudded overhead for days and sank low enough over protesters to generate gale-force winds.

Such dominance was nowhere in evidence Wednesday, despite a near-lockdown of the downtown area on Tuesday night. Trump supporters drove to the Capitol and parked in spaces normally reserved for congressional staff. Some vehicles stopped on the lawns near the Tidal Basin.

The contrast shook Washington’s attorney general, Karl Racine, who seemed to be almost in disbelief on CNN Wednesday evening.

“There was zero intelligence that the Black Lives Matter protesters were going to ‘storm the capitol,’” he remembered, after ticking down the many police forces present in June. “Juxtapose that with what we saw today, with hate groups, militia and other groups that have no respect for the rule of law go into the capitol. … That dichotomy is shocking.”

The question of how law enforcement and the national security establishment failed so spectacularly will likely be the subject of intense focus in coming days.

David Carter, director of the Intelligence Program at Michigan State University, said that sometimes, the best intelligence in the world doesn’t translate into adequate preparedness. Perhaps the security officials responsible for protecting the Capitol simply could not envision that a crowd of Americans would charge through a police line and shatter the glass windows that stood as the only physical barrier to entering the building.

“I go back to the 9/11 commission report,” Carter said. “It was a failure of imagination. They didn’t imagine something like this. Would you imagine people were going to break into the Capitol and go into the chambers? That failure of imagination sometimes makes us drop the ball.”

“Nobody” Hurt, “Just a Perp,” Say Officers After NYPD Shot and Killed Man in His Own Home

ProPublica is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative newsroom. Sign up for The Big Story newsletter to receive stories like this one in your inbox.

Twenty months after Kawaski Trawick was shot and killed by an officer, the New York Police Department has disclosed the nearly full footage of what happened. It shows not only the shooting itself, which the department released footage of last month, but also the minutes afterward.

Other officers converged on the building in the Bronx after the officer who fired at Trawick reported “shots fired.” Many of the arriving officers activated body-worn cameras, which captured what they said.

”Who’s hurt?” a sergeant asks as she arrives in front of Trawick’s door. Two officers respond in near-unison: “Nobody. Just a perp.”

As ProPublica detailed last month, Trawick was shot just 112 seconds after officers arrived at his apartment.

A more experienced, Black officer had tried to stop his younger, white partner from using force. The younger officer first fired his Taser without a verbal warning to Trawick, who had been standing with a bread knife and stick. When Trawick started running toward the officers seconds later, the officer shot Trawick twice, killing him almost instantly.

Trawick’s mother, Ellen Trawick, told ProPublica the further footage “upsets me on so many levels. I don’t see why they would refer to my son as a ‘perp’ — he had not committed a crime, he was not committing a crime and he was in his own home.”

Kawaski Trawick, who had struggled with his mental health and drugs, had called 911 after he locked himself out of his apartment. Firefighters had let Trawick back in, but police arrived soon after. Others in the building had also called 911 saying Trawick was banging on doors and walking the halls with a stick and knife.

“Why are you in my home?” Trawick repeatedly demanded to know after officers arrived. The older officer, Herbert Davis, and his partner, Brendan Thompson, did not answer him. Instead, they told him again and again to put the bread knife down.

About 30 seconds into the encounter, Davis told Thompson, “We ain’t gonna tase him.” When Thompson fired his Taser anyway and then aimed his gun after Trawick got up, Davis briefly pushed it down saying, “No, no — don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t.” (Here is an annotated video of the encounter.)

The newly disclosed footage shows Davis gave this account to colleagues minutes later: “He came at us with a knife. We tased him to stop him because we were trying to tell him to put it down.”

The day after the April 14, 2019, shooting, a top NYPD official told reporters it “appears to be justified. This guy’s charging at them, with a knife in one hand, a stick in the other, screaming at them, in a confined space.”

The NYPD declined to release further details on the case for more than a year and a half, saying doing so could interfere with its investigation. The NYPD released some video of the shooting about a month ago, soon after ProPublica’s story and after the Bronx district attorney published footage.

The NYPD released the latest footage to the nonprofit organization New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, which had sued, demanding the full, unedited footage. The NYPD sent the group multiple videos in late December, the night before a court hearing in the case. The footage includes some redactions by the NYPD to cover things like civilians’ faces.

“It’s good that we’ve been able to get footage, but there’s been an enormous delay,” said Benjamin Reed, a lawyer representing New York Lawyers for the Public Interest. “We first filed our request in the spring of 2019, shortly after the incident.”

In June of 2020, during the height of Black Lives Matter protests, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio ordered the NYPD to quickly release body-worn camera footage after an officer fires a weapon or seriously injures a civilian. The department has said it’s working through a backlog of footage. The NYPD has also faced criticism for not sharing footage with investigators from the Civilian Complaint Review Board.

Asked for the latest on the Trawick case, the NYPD told ProPublica that its investigation is complete but pending review by the police commissioner, who has final say over any discipline. The NYPD told ProPublica in November that both officers remain on active duty. (Davis has declined to comment and Thompson has not returned requests for comment.)

The latest Trawick footage shows the reaction not only of officers. It captures the building’s superintendent distraught in the minutes after the shooting. He had called 911 that night saying Trawick had threatened him after the super wouldn’t open Trawick’s door. “Why did you have to shoot that man?” the super repeatedly asks an officer. “Y’all gonna shoot me too? Come on, y’all couldn’t tase him or something?”

“We did that,” an officer responded. “It didn’t work.”

Lucas Waldron and Mollie Simon contributed reporting.

Still in need of a New Year’s resolution?

Resolve to be a snow angel

Everyone enjoys safe, clear sidewalks – whether you are walking, rolling or delivering mail.

In Denver, residents must clear the sidewalks and wheelchair ramps around their home within 24 hours of a snowfall; businesses within 4 hours of a snowfall. Learn more at denvergov.org/snow.

Show kindness and offer to help your neighbors if they aren’t able to shovel! Neighbors helping neighbors is one of the things that makes Denver great. You can volunteer to be an official “snow angel” at denvergov.org/snowangels or just do a #NeighborCheck. There are all sorts of reasons why people may need assistance, or they may just not know what the city’s rules are for keeping sidewalks clear. A simple conversation with a neighbor or just lending that helping hand will almost always resolve a snowy sidewalk faster than the city can, and it will preserve city resources for the rest of Denver’s 3,000 miles of sidewalks.

Tips:

  • Use the shovel to push the snow; don’t lift it.
  • Shovel early! When snow isn’t shoveled, it gets packed down and becomes ice. Shoveling all the way to the pavement will also prevent ice from forming.
  • Shovel into your yard, so the snow plow doesn’t push it back onto your sidewalk.
  • Shovel away from roadways and bike lanes, so plows don’t push the snow back onto your sidewalks.
  • Salt can be damaging when it runs off into your lawn or the storm sewer with the snowmelt. Look for ecofriendly and pet-safe deicers.
  • Be proactive and come up with a plan for addressing sidewalks now, before it’s snowing.

Virtual Neighborhood Watch Action and Awareness Training, Wednesday, January 13th at 6 pm.  DPD District 3’s Neighborhood Watch program offers a partnership between Officers and the Residents they serve.  Officers promote Neighborhood Connectivity by encouraging Neighbors to get to know one another and by creating awareness through Implicit Bias education – reminding neighbors – it’s the person’s behavior, not the person to be mindful of when observing and reporting suspicious behavior to the Police. (flyer attached) RSVP to D3NeighborhoodWatch@denvergov.org

Simple and inexpensive strategy to prevent vehicle theft. In DPD District 3 more than 2300 vehicles were stolen in 2020. DPD has recommended residents use a steering wheel lock device as a deterrent to vehicle theft. One example of this device is a CLUB steering wheel lock. The CLUB (2 prong) device is available at your local Ace Hardware for $24 and on Amazon for $26. When recently asked, our District 3 CRO’s said to the best of their knowledge no vehicle was stolen in District 3 last year while using a CLUB (2 prong) device. To search crime stats for your neighborhood visit this DPD website: https://www.denvergov.org/Government/Departments/Police-Department/Crime-Information

A few tips to prevent crimes of opportunity –

  1. Do not set out whole, empty product boxes on trash day.  Doing this can alert potential thieves to what type of items are inside your residence.
  2. Turn on your porch light.
  3. Close your garage door after each use.
  4. Lock your vehicles and remove valuables. Use a steering wheel lock.
  5. Leave an appearance you are home at all times.  Collect mail and packages ASAP.

Please reach out to our DPD District 3 Community Resource Officers with any questions or concerns.  West of Colorado Blvd kate.young@denvergov.org  Antonio.pacheco@denvergov.org and east of Colorado Blvd mike.borquez@denvergov.org  matthew.grimsley@denvergov.org

3 Tips for Keeping Your Anilox Rolls Clean

If your business uses flexographic printing, you’re probably familiar with anilox rolls. These cylindrical tools transfer ink from the fountain to the printing plate using small indents called anilox cells. The number of cells on a roll varies and determines how much ink is transferred. One of the most important things you can do to protect the quality of your product is to keep these cells free of residue, but cleaning anilox rolls can get complicated. Before diving in, learn about the various considerations that impact cleaning.

1. Know Why You Clean

Put simply, rolls that aren’t cleaned properly produce sub-par products. When a roll collects residue, it can’t transfer the appropriate amount of ink to the printing plate. The anilox cells become clogged, which decreases their capacity to collect ink and leads to uneven volume distribution across the roll. Ink debris also increases surface tension. If this occurs, some of the ink sticks to the roll instead of transferring to the printing plate. If you don’t use anilox cleaners, you could face reprints, wasted materials and loss of labor or time.

2. Develop a Cleaning Schedule

If you want to optimize your flexographic printing, consider developing a schedule that takes into account various cleaning needs. While your rolls don’t require daily deep cleans, taking a few minutes each day to remove residue with a cloth and cleaning fluid prevents ink deposits from hardening and clogging cells. Even with daily wipe-downs, some residue usually remains. To remove build-up, scrub your rolls with a brush and cleaning product every week or two, ensuring that the brush you use is appropriate for the surface of your anilox roll. Every couple of weeks, consider deep cleaning with a chemical bath or similar process that loosens and removes stubborn residue.

3. Use High-Quality Cleaners

Once you have a cleaning schedule in place, it’s important to select high-quality cleaning products that remove debris without compromising the anilox roll. Before selecting a product, make sure it is compatible with your roll’s surface material and core. When it comes to your daily cleaning fluid, avoid multi-purpose cleaners. If your product isn’t designed for anilox rolls or removing ink, you’ll waste time and effort repeatedly wiping down your rolls. For weekly scrubbing, look to a paste or a cream cleaner to physically break-up the ink deposits that remain despite daily cleaning. Many businesses rely on periodic chemical baths to deep clean anilox rolls effectively. However, some people prefer to use chemical-free methods. Regardless, select a product that targets your specific needs, whether that is water- or solvent-based.

With regular and effective cleaning, you can ensure high-performance printing and extend the life cycle of your anilox roll.
