Race & Social Justice Demonstration Scheduled in Hilltop Tonight

Starts tonight (Tuesday July 7) at 7pm at Sundial Plaza in Cranmer Park.  

Let’s take pictures of the beautiful houses.  All photo skill levels and camera types welcome and encouraged.  

Wear a mask,  Stay off private property.  

Let’s practice our photographic rights.

Statement from our District 5 Councilwoman Amanda Sawyer:

Dear Neighbors,

Our office wanted to let you know that there is a small demonstration planned for this evening at 6:30 pm in Cranmer Park, in response to an incident featured by Kyle Clark on 9News yesterday. You may have seen the video, which was of a Hilltop resident who apparently had an altercation with an African American gentleman who was taking a photograph of a home on Clermont Street. Denver Police will not be present at the event.

Unfortunately I am out of town with my family, and will not be in attendance at the demonstration this evening either. However, I absolutely value people’s First Amendment rights to assemble peacefully and voice our frustrations at what is happening in Denver and throughout our world right now. When I ran for office, I did so with the intent of bringing District 5 voices to city government. I stand in support of my constituents of color and the greater Denver community. As Angela Davis said, “In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be antiracist.”

I urge our District 5 community to not only support people’s right to demonstrate, but also participate in this movement. This could take the form of demonstrating, talking to your children about racism, donating to an anti-racism organization, or educating yourself on racial inequalities by reading one of the many wonderful books by authors of color on this subject.
