Statement from our Association on recent events

Dear Neighbors:

As President of the Cranmer Park / Hilltop Civic Association, I was stunned and saddened to see the video of a Hilltop community neighbor confronting, following, and berating a Black man on Clermont Street.  It was difficult to watch, but more importantly, I can only imagine what it must have been like to have received such unwarranted vitriol.

In no uncertain terms, we condemn these actions.  And as a community, we offer our sincere apologies to the unidentified man.  Every person has the unassailable right to walk the streets of our city and our community and enjoy its parks and public spaces free from harassment and provocation.

The Hilltop community prides itself on its openness and togetherness, as well as a durable respect of the innate worth of every individual.  This video shows a glaring failure on all of our part to foster an inclusive neighborhood and to live up to these shared ideals.

The acts depicted on this video do not represent us as a Hilltop community.  But in their shocking reality, this truth must push us to look at ourselves and our neighbors, engage one another in conversation, and expect more from everyone.

The Civic Association will continue to work with our neighbors and within our neighborhood to ensure that events like this never happen again here.  We invite you to our quarterly meetings (found at the website http://denverhilltop.com/) to help collectively decide our path forward.

Sincerely,

Jeff Cuneo
