Perlmutter retains 7th Congressional seat - #lakewoodnews

Democrat incumbent Ed Perlmutter overwhelmingly retained his 7th Congressional District seat, defeating Republican challenger George Athanasopoulos by a 15 percent margin.

With nearly 184,000 votes counted, Perlumtter had received 55.1 percent of the vote compared to Athanasopoulos' 40.8 percent. Libertarian candidate Martin L. Buchanan received 3.9 percent of votes.

During the campaign, Perlmutter said The Affordable Care Act is improving and enhancing the health of millions of Americans, but a few legislative fixes still need addressing. He also knows immigration will be a hot topic.

"I strongly support comprehensive immigration reform and believe we need to establish a legal path to citizenship for people who have not committed any crimes, are paying taxes and are learning English," he said in a previous interview.

During the race, Athanasopoulos said Congress should start the next session with an issue that has bipartisan support, as a positive first step to bring both parties together. He also agrees that immigration is an important issue.

"As the son of immigrants, I respect and value the diversity that immigration adds to our country and the important roles immigrants have played throughout our history," he said in a previous interview. "As a former Army officer, however, I know uncontrolled borders are an ongoing national security crisis."
