In the race for Senate District 19, Democrat challenger Rachel Zenzinger is narrowly leading Republican incumbent Laura Woods 48.1 percent to 46.3 percent with more than 66,000 votes counted as of 9 p.m.
Libertarian candidate Hans Romer has just over 5 percent.
"I'm feeling pretty optimistic about how this is going to turn out," Zenzinger said after the first numbers came in at 7 p.m. "I think this shows being a moderate voice is very important to this district."
Zenzinger described the race as uglier than anticipated, something she looks to change.
During the campaign, Zenzinger said she hopes to see the legislature find a way to agree on the re-categorization of the hospital provider fee, which would allow the state to put those funds toward transportation and education needs.
"We also need to remain aggressive in our efforts to address the public schools' 'negative factor' and make sure that we provide quality education for all our children, regardless of zip code," she said in a previous interview.
Woods was not immediately available for comment.
Woods defeated Zenzinger for the seat in 2014, a seat that Zenzinger was appointed to in 2013 after Evie Hudak resigned in the face of a recall vote.
