William Winters Leverett

A 27-year-old man facing murder charges in Connecticut is a registered sex offender convicted of sexual assault of a child in Colorado.

William Winters Leverett has been charged with the 2014 murder of Melissa Millan, an insurance executive who was stabbed while jogging on a trail in Simsbury, according to the Hartford Courant.

Leverett, who is being held on $2 million bail, was convicted of sex assault on a child in May 2011 in El Paso County, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records.

The El Paso County conviction stemmed from a September 2009 assault, according to court records. Leverett was released in Colorado in August 2011, according to Connecticut sex offender registry records.

Leverett told police in Connecticut last week that he went into a “frenzy” after seeing Millan jogging on a trail in Simsbury four years ago and described brutally stabbing her in the chest in a random attack that shocked the community, according to the Courant.
